This heartwarming image was created by a group of women who attend our weekly wellbeing group. They wanted to express a simple yet profound message: “You are enough.”
The loneliness of Christmas
This message was born out of a desire to address the common feelings of pressure and loneliness that often intensify during the Christmas season. The women understand the unique challenges many face during the holidays and discussed how Christmas can be a challenging time, even when surrounded by others.
For example, parents may feel overwhelmed by the demands of work, childcare, and holiday preparations. Those living far from family may experience loneliness and longing for loved ones and traditions. Mental health challenges can be exacerbated by the pressure to be happy and festive. Bereavement and loss can make the Christmas season particularly painful, as it highlights the absence of loved ones and difficult family dynamics can also lead to stress and conflict.
They recognise the pressure to conform to societal expectations, the financial strain, and the loneliness that can accompany this festive time. Christmas can often be idealised through social media and traditional imagery, exacerbating feelings of inadequacy. The curated images of perfect families and extravagant celebrations can create a stark contrast to reality for many.
A symbol of hope
The group spent time discussing the symbolism they wanted to incorporate into the drawing. They chose a robin, a symbol of hope and resilience, and a lamp post, representing guidance and a beacon of light in the darkness. For the women, the robin symbolises the presence of loved ones who have passed. They believe that spotting a robin is a sign that their loved ones are nearby. Similarly, the lamp post, a constant source of light, represents guidance and direction, reminding them of a sense of safety and security.
The poem accompanying the drawing carries a powerful message. The women want to encourage others to focus on their own strengths and accomplishments, rather than comparing themselves to others, even more so at this time of year. Their message of self-acceptance and hope is an important reminder that we are all enough, just as we are.
“You are ENOUGH”
Always remember you are enough
Even on the darkest night the stars still shine
Whisper your fears to the wind and let it blow the doubts from your soul
You can’t choose the music life plays, but you can choose how to dance to it.
Remember, you make a difference.
You are amazing
You are beautiful
You are ENOUGH.
We will be leaving postcards of this wonderful image and poem dotted at various locations around Chester in the coming weeks. Please keep your eyes peeled and feel free to tag our social media when you find them!
Merry Christmas!
